Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Lucca is a very contemporary fine dining restaurant in the East Village. It's a long, narrow building with exposed brick walls, high ceilings, and white table settings. A very modern feel of what you would expect in NYC. The food is Tuscan-Italian inspired but it's not limited to that cuisine. The menu will change daily. Lunch is served from 11-2pm and dinner from 5-10pm. Dinner is a 2 course meal M-Th and includes a 3rd cheese course on Fr-Sa. Absolutely outstanding food, every time. Don't be afraid to order something you normally wouldn't like because chances are you've never had it like this. The wait staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and I've never had such consistent results on the plate in a restaurant. Be sure to try the gnocchi for the first course. I love gnocchi but I've never had it as wonderful as it's prepared here.

Great lunches at pretty good prices. Dinner is pretty good. Not sure it is worth the price though.

Lucca's food and atmosphere are fantastic. It's a small restaurant, but it has great service and a great vibe. The dress is semi-dress for dinner, which gives it a fun flavor. The menu is always changing, so you never know what you might order for your primi and secondi. Sitting in the East Village at the base of the Iowa capitol it is picturesque and there's plenty of parking. I had the gnocchi (they are well known for this), and the chicken breast with cuos-cuos, cheese and prosciutto. It isn't just a restaurant, it's more like a dining experience. [recommend making a reservation in advance]

This was my first restaurant experience in Des Moines. Just a cute little restaurant with a modern, trendy feel, gave you the Lincoln Park vibe of Chicago. Their restaurant is simple with sandwiches, soups and salads. I opted for a sandwich that was just fresh and yummy. Tried to go back one day but it was after the infamous 2 p.m. good luck trying to find food in downtown Des Moines time. Hope to get back!

I enjoyed eating at Lucca and the food was great, but the price is simply too high for the food they offer in this market. I'd prefer Montage, Django, or Phat Chefs over Lucca for the price. I appreciate what they've done with the space and that they've taken some risks in the menu selection, but I doubt I'll go back with so many great restaurants in the area which provide a higher and more consistent value.

Pretentious. Food was alright, but inconsistent; some dishes too hot, some cold. My salmon was under seasoned as well.

For what you'll spend here, I can think of a dozen other places in Des Moines you should eat before going to Lucca. I've enjoyed Lucca in the past, but my last two experiences here have been less than acceptable. Gnocchi that was not even cooked (honestly solid dough balls that were extremely gummy) and in a "brown butter sauce" that was simply melted butter. Terrible. Amatriciana was quite good, with bits of bacon adding the requisite smokiness - something I'd order again for sure. Scallops were obviously tossed in a pan as opposed to searing on each side, and were overcooked and tough along with unappealing to look at. My steak was cooked properly, although there was little to no seasoning on it, as the potatoes it was served with had a lack of the promised gorgonzola cream. The panna cotta we ordered for dessert was good. Service was extremely awkward.

Excellent service, excellent food. Excellent ambiance, too. Lunch is good--similar to Basil Prospieri's in 801 Grand, a bit pricier--dinner is divine. The prix fix menu leaves you plenty of choices and everything I've tasted there has been well-executed. Their servers are smart and approachable. I hesitate to tell this story, but remember I gave this place five stars. The first time we went for dinner, my wife found a piece of plastic in her pasta--I think the wrapping of a cheese. We were a bit appalled, but the server/management handled the situation with grace and generosity. We didn't make it back for months, and when we went back, more than one server remembered us and made sure we were taken care of. Now, the experience is (I think) out-of-the-ordinary, but speaks well to their commitment to being Des Moines' best restaurant.

We visited this place with a another couple that were eager to try this place as it had recieved great reviews. To start off they did not have a cheese course and the explanation from the server was that they had moved all the cheese over to the pizza place they just opened up a block away. That was a little disappointing but the ambiance was fun and the company was great. You really can't look over the menu as there are no descriptions. you have to wait for your server to come to your table and explain all of that and then try to remember what sounded good when making your decision. The food was okay. I had the gnocchi followed by the skirt steak. It was alright. Nothing really to remember. As we were finishing our dinners suddenly we had live music. A guy on fiddle and someone playing a small guitar like thing wandering and playing through out the resturant. It was really loud so needless to say that ended the conversation and we paid our bill and left.

I'll take other diners' word for the quality of the food at Lucca. However, if communication is part of customer service, then Lucca failed during our long-planned visit to Des Moines in December 2008. We had done our research, visited the web site and read the menu, even checked out the restaurant visually during the afternoon. It was only when we presented ourselves for an early dinner that we were confronted with the small sign that read "Private party." The restaurant was closed to the public. We were surprised and disappointed that neither the sign listing the opening hours in the window nor the restaurant's web site had any information about the closure as little as two hours before the event. A restaurant that sets the bar this high should make a better effort at communicating with its existing and new customers, even during the holidays.

We enjoyed this restaurant and will definitely go back again. The service was very prompt and professional. Everything about our meal was well timed so that our group could enjoy our company, wine and food at a leisurely pace. Overall our food was very good, and will be back to try other dishes. Our complaints: We ordered the cabernet sauvignon and was told they were sold out. Who is sold out of a basic wine on a Saturday night? They were also sold out of one of the first course selections. From other reviews, this appears to be a chronic problem. I would also note my roasted pork belly was overcooked

This is the second time I have been to Lucca. We went to celebrate a job offer and the staff at Lucca was very professional and knowledgeable. While the food was great, the service well paced, and the atmosphere nice, the kitchen was smokey and very hot. Despite the kitchen heat, this place is consistently one of the best restaurants I have been to and I will continue to visit in the future.

I've only had a chance to visit Lucca once, but it might have been the best meal I have ever had! The menu changes constantly so it's a great place to visit again and again. It is a great addition to the up and coming East Villiage.
